The Bangladesh government is considering Universal Military Training for youth, as discussed at the Deputy Commissioners (DC) Conference.
Speaking at Dhaka’s Osmani Memorial Auditorium after the conference, Abdul Hafiz, special assistant to the interim leader Muhammad Yunus, said, “Our young generation can receive military training and contribute to national defence. However, this is a political decision requiring financial considerations. If approved, the armed forces are ready to implement it.”
The conference also addressed coordination between the civil administration and armed forces. Hafiz said that of 6,000 weapons looted during the August unrest, three-quarters had been recovered, but 1,400 weapons and 250,000 rounds of ammunition remain missing. “The joint forces are working to recover the rest,” he said. He warned that “Sheikh Hasina’s autocratic forces and their allies are regrouping, which could destabilise the country,” instructing DCs to remain vigilant.
