At least 13 people died when a fighter aircraft crashed on Monday into a residential area in the port city of Yeysk in Russia after suffering engine failure.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said that a Su-34 fighter bomber crashed and set off a fire spanning 2 thousand square meters. Local media reported that 68 people were rescued from the blaze in the nine-storey building.

Nineteen injured people are being treated in the hospital. Yeysk is located on the Azov Sea coast near Russia’s border with Ukraine. The town has around 90 thousand inhabitants and is home to a Russian Air Force base.

The Russian Investigative Committee said that it has opened a criminal case and sent investigators to the site.
