Indian Army’s policy of preferential promotion to those in combat units was upheld by the Supreme Court today. The top court has directed the government to create 141 extra posts of Colonel to accommodate those who could not be promoted because of the policy. The 2009 Army policy allows promotion as Colonels to combat units and not to those in engineering, signals and artillery units. Infantry, mechanised infantry and the armoured corps are part of army’s combat units. The policy was struck down by the Armed Forces Tribunal and the Centre had appealed in the Supreme Court.
