NEW DELHI: (AMN) Renowned economist and Rajya Sabha member Arjun Kumar Sengupta, died here on Sunday after a brief illness. Sengupta, was 73. He was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences where he died. He is survived by his wife and daughter. Sengupta has worked as a special secretary to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi; ambassador of India to the EU; member of the Planning Commission; and chairman of the National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector.
Dr. Sengupta was a well known developmental economist and a diplomat who served in various capacities within the Government and many international organisations.
Dr. Arjun Sengupta’s Report on the unorganized sector is a guiding force to provide minimum social security for all unorganised workers. Dr. Sengupta’s studies have also reflected cross-linkages between extreme poverty and the downtrodden. His dedication, sense of public service and honesty serve as an inspiration to all.
Several leaders including Vice President of India have condoled his death. The Vice President of India, M Hamid Ansari in his message said Dr. Sengupta was a developmental economist who worked as a guiding force to provide minimum social security for all unorganized workers.
