WASHINGTON: In a strategic move to boost high-value agricultural shipments to North America, the Indian Embassy in Washington, in collaboration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the Department of Commerce, and the Dupont Circle Business Improvement District, hosted the annual Indian Mango Festival at Dupont Circle.

The business-focused trade promotion event aimed to tap into the premium retail food market in the United States by showcasing top-tier Indian mango varieties, including Alphonso, Kesar, Dasheri, Langra, and Banganapalli.

Tapping the Premium US Retail Value Chain

The festival drew hundreds of American consumers and trade visitors, triggering significant consumer interest and a vocal demand for expanded shelf presence across mainstream US supermarkets.

Strategic Impact on Agricultural Exports

  • Trade Volume Expansion: India stands as the world’s largest producer of mangoes. This trade push is part of a concerted effort by APEDA to expand the market footprint of Indian fresh produce in high-realization Western markets.
  • Overcoming Phytosanitary Barriers: Indian Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, noted that the festival has institutionalized itself as an annual marketing attraction, adding that outbound shipments to the US have risen steadily due to improved supply chain logistics and compliant irradiation protocols.
  • Market Access: By directly engaging with business improvement districts and urban consumer hubs, the trade delegation aims to transition mango exports from niche diaspora stores to mass-market US retail chains.
