Amid the furor over exist polls, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav Thursday dropped a political bombshell indicating that his alliance might go with rival BSP to form government in state in case it could not get required number of seat in the election results.
“I always respected her (Mayawati), and because of this many may construe that there could be an alliance (with BSP). But it’s hard to say anything about the possibility of joining hands (with her)…,” Yadav told BBC Hindi.
The Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party is the only remaining big player in the state but when asked about a possible tie-up, Yadav remained ambiguous.
He said the BJP was a bigger rival than the BSP.
While all exit polls put the BJP ahead in the country’s largest state, most predicted a hung House in Uttar Pradesh, where voting was staggered in seven phases spread over a month.
Exit polls give high hope to BJP in UP, Uttrakhand and Manipur
Exuding confidence that his Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance will win the elections, Akhilesh Yadav indicated joining hands with other political parties to deny the BJP any room to control the state.
“It is my belief that farmers, youths and women have voted in SP’s favour. Once the results come out, the situation will be evident. I’m confident the SP-Congress alliance will win majority and form the government,” Akhilesh Yadav told BBC Hindi today after exit polls released their projections.
