At least 41 people were killed and more than 80 injured in a suicide bomb attack in the Afghan capital, Kabul. According to reports, a Shia cultural organisation was the target but the Afghan Voice news agency was also hit. So-called Islamic State said it was behind the attack.

Officials said the victims included 17 media persons. Deputy spokesman for the Interior Ministry, Nasrat Rahimi, said women and students were also among the casualties of the attack.

The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack took place near an office of the National Directorate of Security today when a suicide bomber detonated explosives at the entrance to the Tebyan Centre in the Pul-i-Sokhta neighbourhood of Kabul which houses the Afghan Voice news agency.

President Ashraf Ghani in a statement has denounced the attack as a “crime against humanity.”

Today’s bombing follows an attack on a private television station in Kabul last month, which was also claimed by IS.
