Delhi police has constituted an SIT to search for Najeeb after Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke with the Delhi Police Commissioner.
Taking the matter seriously, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh called up the commissioner of Delhi Police, and directed the setting up of an SIT to locate the missing student.
27-year-old Najeeb Ahmed, a first-year M.Sc student at the School of Biotechnology in JNU, went missing on Saturday.
The Delhi Police has also informed the SSPs concerned as well as police officers across India about Najeeb’s disappearance and has given out advertisements in newspapers. The police also announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for any person who provides information on Najeeb.
In an order issued late Wednesday, the police said that any information or clue regarding the missing/abducted Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student could be given to the Station House Officer (SHO) of Vasant Kunj North police station.
It added that a cash reward of Rs 50,000 would be given to anyone who gave information regarding Ahmed’s whereabouts.
Ahmed went missing on October 15 night from the university hostel Mahi-Mandvi after a brawl with ABVP students.
A police complaint was filed under section 365 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine a person, and a proctorial inquiry was also initiated by the varsity.
Yesterday Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University and some other officials were virtually held captive for 22 hours before being allowed to go by hundreds of protesting students who were demanding stronger efforts to track down missing student Najeeb Ahmed.
Finally, the Vice Chancellor and other JNU officials were allowed to leave their offices after being held in siege by agitating students for over 20 hours.
Coming down heavily on protesting students, the VC said that the university is sincerely working to locate Najeeb Ahmed. He expressed hope that the missing student will be located soon. He also appealed to the students to maintain peace at the campus.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju disapproved of the treatment meted out to the Vice Chancellor and other officers of the university. He said that few students are playing politics on this issue.
