fire incidentAt least 23 people reported to have died and many received severe injuries in the a massive fire that broke out at Bhubaneswar’s Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital Monday evening. However official have put the toll figure  at 19 and 100 injured.

The fire is suspected to have started from the dialysis ward of the hospital, possibly due to an electrical short circuit, from where it spread to the Intensive Care Unit and Medicine wards.

The fire is suspected to have started from the dialysis ward of the hospital, located on the first floor, possibly due to an electrical short circuit, around 7.30 PM. From there it spread to the Intensive Care Unit and the medicine wards.

According to Hospital Deputy Superitendent Basant Pati all patients from ICU have been shifted and all patients on ventilator in ICU and OT of Dialysis deptt are safe.

Critical patients are being shifted to other hospitals.

Several patients reportedly suffering from asphyxiation. Five fire tenders pressed into service. Several ambulances have been pressed into service to shift patients. Chaos outside hospital as panic grips attendants and relatives of patients .

Police Commissioner YB Khurania, DCP Satyabrata Bhoi have reached to monitor rescue operation .

” It will be difficult to assess situation right now. Rescue operation underway”, said Binay Behera, DG, Fire Services.

SUM Hospital is an intrinsic part of the Institute of Medical Sciences with a total number of 750 beds, 25 intensive care beds and 150 cabins. SUM Hospital offers therapeutic care with a focus on preventive care for a healthy society.
