The BRICS Summit began Saturday evening with an informal dinner of leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The main summit day is tomorrow, which will start with a restricted meeting of the five BRICS leaders, followed by a plenary session, BIMSTEC Meeting, and BRICS and BIMSTEC Outreach Meeting.
As part of India’s Act East Policy, BIMSTEC nations – Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Sri Lanka, besides India, have been invited. India took over BRICS Presidency on 15th of February this year.
The theme of the Summit revolves around people-to-people contact which includes youth engagement, increased business-to-business and people-to-people interactions.
During the course of the year 115 events were planned. The events included two parliamentary meetings, 15 ministerial level meetings, 56 senior officials’ meetings, a number of workshops and BRICS U-17 Football Tournament.
