Javed Ahmad has been appointed as new Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh. A 1984 batch IPS officer, Ahmad was till now DG Railways. He will succeeded Jagmohan Yadav who superannuated yesterday.
Mr. Ahmad has long experience on various senior and sensitive posts including his stint in CBI. Javeed Ahmad is eighth DGP since March 2012, when the present Samajwadi Party government led by Akhilesh Yadav came into power.
Javed Ahmed’s appointment is seen as a foresighted decision since he was chosen above 15 senior bureaucrats for the prestigious post. He is expected to head the department till 2020, up to his retirement.
“With the help of constables, inspectors and higher officials I will work towards restoring the confidence in the police force”, he said, adding that efforts would be made to inculcate a feeling in them that they have to do something good for the state,” Javed said while addressing a press conference on Friday.
The closest competition to Javed for the top post came from Ranjan Dwivedi, a 1979-batch IPS, who is the most senior personnel in the state security force.
Till December 31, Javed was appointed as the DG (Railways), posted in Lucknow. He is regarded as a man of stern action. Before being transferred in Uttar Pradesh, Javed has also remitted his service in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
