Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described the ongoing conflict in West Asia as one of the gravest crises of the decade and urged citizens to support national efforts by reducing pressure on the country’s resources and promoting self-reliance through greater use of local products.

Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Sardardham Hostel in Vadodara, the Prime Minister said the Centre is making continuous efforts to minimise the impact of the international crisis on Indian citizens and the economy.

Calling for collective responsibility during challenging times, Modi appealed to people to reduce dependence on imported goods and avoid unnecessary expenditure of foreign currency. He said the “Vocal for Local” campaign should now evolve into a nationwide public movement aimed at strengthening domestic industries and empowering local entrepreneurs.

“The need of the hour is to prioritise indigenous products and support businesses in our villages, towns and cities,” the Prime Minister said, stressing that every citizen can contribute through small but meaningful efforts.

Drawing parallels with the COVID-19 pandemic, Modi said India had successfully overcome one of the century’s greatest crises through collective resolve and public participation. He expressed confidence that the nation would similarly navigate the current geopolitical and economic challenges arising from the West Asia conflict.

The Prime Minister also urged citizens to adopt fuel-saving measures by reducing the use of petrol and diesel, increasing reliance on metro rail services, electric vehicles and public transportation. He further advised people to avoid purchasing gold until the situation stabilises, while encouraging offices to prioritise virtual meetings and work-from-home arrangements wherever possible. Schools, he added, should continue online classes for some time.

Remembering Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on the occasion, Modi noted that the day marked 75 years since the restoration of the Somnath Temple, a project closely associated with Patel’s vision and determination.

During the programme, leaders of the Patidar community conferred the Sardar Ratna Award on the Prime Minister. Modi also paid floral tributes to Patel’s statue and inspected various facilities at the Sardardham complex, including the reception area, dining hall and e-library.

Built at an estimated cost of around ₹150 crore, the Sardardham Hostel complex will provide accommodation for 2,000 students, including separate hostel facilities for boys and girls. The campus also includes a central dining hall, library and auditorium aimed at supporting students pursuing higher education.
