New Delhi: In a major revelations , Indian National Congress (INC) on  Sunday levelled serious allegations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, claiming his wife possesses foreign passports and has business interests abroad.

Addressing a press conference in the national capital, AICC chief spokesperson Pawan Khera alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma holds “three livings passports” issued by the United Arab Emirates, Antigua and Barbuda, and the Arab Republic of Egypt, raising questions over her citizenship status and the legality of holding multiple passports.

Khera further claimed that she is associated with and has operated a company based in the United States, alleging that details of such foreign business interests raise serious concerns.

The Congress demanded immediate action against the Chief Minister, calling for his arrest and disqualification from electoral politics. It also alleged that Himanta Biswa Sarma failed to disclose alleged assets of Dubai in his election affidavit, terming it a violation of mandatory disclosure norms.

The party urged the Government of India to initiate a thorough investigation into the matter, including the citizenship status of Riniki Bhuyan Sarma and the legality of her alleged foreign passports and overseas business operations.

Additionally, the Congress called upon the Election Commission of India to take cognisance of the alleged non-disclosure of foreign assets and examine whether it constitutes grounds for disqualification under election laws.

Raising a direct question, the opposition party asked whether Riniki Bhuyan Sarma is an Indian citizen, and if so, how she could legally hold multiple foreign passports. It demanded a time-bound probe and strict action if violations are established.

Article 9 of the Constitution and Section 9 of the Citizenship Act, 1955, prohibit holding Indian citizenship alongside foreign nationality voluntarily. Acquiring another country’s citizenship terminates Indian citizenship automatically. “Does Riniki Bhuyan Sarma hold Indian citizenship at all?” he inquired. The Congress leader further alleged that the Chief Minister and his wife had overseas financial interests, including properties in Dubai and a company registered in the US state of Wyoming, which he claimed had not been disclosed in the affidavit submitted to the Election Commission. Referring to documents related to a firm named “Riniki Bhuyan Sarma Asset Collective LLC”, Khera alleged that the entity had financial holdings and business plans, including hospitality ventures. He questioned the choice of Wyoming as a jurisdiction, citing its tax structure and provisions for corporate privacy.

Assam CM Rejects Congress Charges, Announces Defamation Case Against Pawan Khera

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday strongly rejected the allegations made by Pawan Khera, calling them “malicious, fabricated and politically motivated.”

Responding to the accusations raised by the Indian National Congress during a press conference, Sarma said the statements reflected “frustration and panic” within the opposition party as Assam moves towards what he described as a historic electoral mandate.

The Chief Minister said he and his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, would file both criminal and civil defamation cases against Khera within the next 48 hours over the remarks.

Sarma asserted that he had full faith in the judiciary and said the truth would be established in a court of law. He added that Khera would be held accountable for what he termed “reckless and defamatory statements.”
