Kuwait’s power and water desalination plant was targeted in an Iranian attack on Friday, resulting in material damage to parts of the facility.
The official spokesperson for the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Engineer Fatima Abbas Jawhar Hayat, confirmed the incident, stating that technical and emergency teams were immediately deployed under approved response plans. She added that efforts are underway in full coordination with security and relevant authorities to secure the affected site.
The incident has raised serious concerns, given Kuwait’s heavy reliance on desalination for its water supply. Nearly 90 per cent of the country’s drinking water is produced by converting seawater from the Gulf into potable water, making such facilities critical national infrastructure. Any prolonged disruption could have an immediate and significant impact on daily life.
Earlier in the day, other locations were also targeted, including Mina Al Ahmadi refinery where air defence systems intercepted several incoming drones and missiles. Authorities reported limited damage in these incidents, while security forces remain on high alert amid concerns of further escalation.
