As 2025 draws to a close, Indian Railways is charting an ambitious path to transform itself into a world-class transport network, driven by focused efforts, innovation and indigenisation. With the common passenger at the heart of its vision, the national transporter has taken major strides this year to make rail travel safer, faster and more comfortable, while also strengthening its role in India’s economic growth.

One of the most significant developments has been the expansion of modern train services. After extending the comfort of contemporary travel to non-AC passengers through Amrit Bharat trains, Indian Railways is now preparing to operationalise its first Vande Bharat Sleeper train for long-distance AC journeys. This much-awaited initiative is expected to redefine overnight travel by drastically cutting journey times on busy routes, before being gradually rolled out across the network.

Station redevelopment has also gathered pace, with several stations across the country now offering airport-like facilities. Wider and modern entrances, upgraded toilets, escalators, lifts, food courts and state-of-the-art waiting halls are becoming standard features, enhancing the overall passenger experience and ease of movement.

In a shift aimed at improving onboard services, Railways is introducing local cuisine on various trains, bringing regional flavours to passengers while ensuring better hygiene and quality. Branded food and beverage options at stations are also set to become more common in the coming year.

Beyond passenger comfort, Indian Railways is strengthening its freight capabilities to emerge as a global leader. With Gati Shakti cargo terminals, record wagon production and the increased use of dedicated freight corridors, Railways is scripting a new growth story. These efforts are helping India move toward becoming the world’s second-largest freight carrier, surpassing the United States.

Safety upgrades, modern rolling stock and advanced systems are increasingly defining India’s rail landscape. At the same time, Railways is prioritising sustainability, moving toward greener and more eco-friendly operations as part of its long-term vision.

With strong investments in infrastructure, connectivity and capacity addition, Indian Railways is laying a solid foundation for the future. The achievements of 2025 have set the stage for 2026, promising passengers more comfort, faster journeys and world-class services — as the national transporter aligns itself with India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation.
