Bangladesh interim government has barred Indian-origin Islamic preacher Zakir Naik from entering the country until after the upcoming national elections, citing security and logistical concerns.

The decision was made on Tuesday at a meeting of the Law and Order Core Committee at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Dhaka.

Naik had been invited by a local organisation to address a two-day conference in Dhaka on November 28–29, with other events across the country. However, the plan drew protests from civil society groups and concern from security agencies.

“Security is already under tremendous pressure due to the election schedule,” a senior official told this correspondent, adding the move was necessary to “maintain law and order and ensure a peaceful electoral process.”

Naik’s entry ban is temporary and could be reviewed once the new government is formed. The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus had earlier approved a month-long visit starting November 28, but the approval was suspended following Tuesday’s meeting.
