The form would be available soon on the internet. Earlier it was notified that the form had to be attested by the ‘Indian mission’. However,the foreign ministry expressed its inability to conduct attestation work as it lacked staffs for the purpose. The law ministry on February 10, 2011 amended the notification by replacing the attested by ‘Indian mission’ with ‘self attested’.
According to additional secretary of ministry of Law and justice N K Nampoothiry the rules have come into force on the February, 10 2011. “The overseas Indians can now furnish the documents self attested by them” he told TIA.
The amending Act confer voting rights to citizens of India who are absenting from their place or ordinary residence in India owing to their employment, education or otherwise outside India (whether temporarily or not).
Vide the amending Act, they shall be entitled to have their names registered in the electoral roll in the Assembly/Parliamentary constituency in which their place of residence in India as mentioned in their passport is located.
