President Droupadi Murmu today stressed the need to invest in girls’ education to paves the way for the progress of the nation as they can make significant contributions to the economy and have a positive impact on society as a whole.
Addressing the 165th convocation ceremony of the University of Madras, President Murmu lauded the university’s efforts in promoting gender equality and empowering girls through education. She extended heartfelt congratulations to the graduating students and appreciation for the dedicated faculties, staff, and members of the university for their unwavering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and academic excellence.
The President highlighted the significance of India’s rich tradition of Sangam literature, emphasising the wisdom and vision found in Tirukural, which has been guiding the nation for centuries.
She shared some impressive statistics about the University of Madras, noting that it currently has approximately 185,000 students studying in this University and its affiliated colleges. Notably, over 50 per cent of the students are girls, and a remarkable 70 per cent of the 105 students who received gold medals at the ceremony today are also females.
During her convocation address, President Murmu highlighted the historical significance of the University of Madras, describing it as one of the oldest universities in India that played a crucial role in disseminating knowledge and driving social change and progress. She proudly mentioned that several former presidents, including APJ Abdul Kalam, VV Giri, Narayanan, and eminent personalities like Rajagopalachary and Sir C.V. Raman, were students of this esteemed university, adding to its glorious legacy. She emphasised the importance of holistic growth and the well-being of students toward a confident future.
Concluding her address, she quoted Subramaniya Bharathi, expressing the importance of blending traditional knowledge with modern science and embracing a comprehensive approach to education and societal development. The convocation ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi, Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin, TN Higher Education Minister Shri. Ponmudi, and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Madras, S. Gowri.
After the ceremony, the President will participate in a programme organised by the Governor of Tamil Nadu R.N. Ravi, at Rajbhavan, where she will interact with a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group from the region. Later in the evening, she will unveil the portrait of the great poet Mahakavi Subramaniya Bharathiyar and rename the Darbar Hall of Rajbhavan as “Bharathiyar Hall,” honouring his enduring legacy.
