Several students of Jamia Millia Islamia were injured as the police used force to push them back from marching towards the Parliament House here today. More than two dozen students, including some female students, are being treated at Al Shifa hospital in Jamia Nagar, according to India Tomorrow news.
“The cops caught me by collar from behind and pushed me behind. I was feeling suffocated. Then they hit me with flash batons and I fainted,” said Qasim, a student of Jamia. He was rushed to the Al Shifa hospital.
The police, however, urged them to restrict the protests to the university as permission for the march to Parliament had been rejected. The students, in retaliation, railed against the police and jumped barricades.
Several were injured as the scuffle intensified.
“Your permission to march has been denied, I request you to protest around this area only and not march ahead,” said Upendra Singh, SHO of Jamia Nagar police station.
Some students had jumped on the police barricades. They were pushed back by the police – some were injured as they fell.
Meanwhile, India Today has quoted doctors of Jamia medical facility that some female students were hit in their private parts by the cops. “More than 10 female students have been hit on their private parts. We have found blunt injuries and some have been hit in a way that we had to shift them to Al Shifa because injuries are serious in nature,” the doctors told India Today TV.
Delhi Police registers case against anti-CAA protesters
The Delhi Police on Monday said it has filed a case against “violent crowd” that carried out a march against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) from Jamia Milia Islamia to Parliament earlier in the day.
The FIR has been registered under sections relevant to obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions, assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty and omission to assist public servant.
The statement from the police said: “The Delhi Police, especially the South-East District, showed a lot of patience in handling the aggressive Jamia Students near Holy Family Hospital where they were forcing their way through the police barricades and trying to march to Parliament without permission,”
“A case is being registered against the violent crowd under relevant provisions of law,” the statement further said.
