Hindi poet Gopal Das Neeraj passed away in New Delhi last evening after a prolonged illness. He was 94. His famous poetic works include Asawari, Lahar Pukare and Paran Geet.
Born in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh on 4th January 1925, Neeraj also created name for his lyrics for films like Prem Pujari, Tere Mere Sapne, Chanda Aur Bijli and Sharmili.
He won 3 Filmfare awards and penned some of the all time hits like Likhe jo khat tujhe, ae bhai zara dekh ke chalo, Khilte hain gul yahan, Rangeela re, Shokhiyon mein ghola jaye and phoolon ke rang se dil ki kalam se. Neeraj was conferred with Padma Shri in 1991 and Padma Bhushan in 2007.
President Ram Nath Kovind condoling the death of the poet said he is sad to hear of the passing of veteran poet and lyricist Gopal Das Neeraj. In a tweet, he said from “Prem Pujari” to “Cha Cha Cha” Neeraj’s compositions and film songs are still remembered, still heard and still stir the soul.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over demise of the poet. In a tweet, he said, Neeraj’s unique style connected him with people from all walks of life and across generations. He said the poet’s works are unforgettable gems, which will live on and inspire many.
