World No. 27 Senegal started their World Cup campaign in splendid style as they upset World No. 8 Poland 2-1 in their opening Group H match. An own goal by Thiago Cionek gave Senegal 1-0 lead at the half-time break, and at the hour mark M’Baye Niang doubled the lead. Grzegorz Krychowiak pulled one back in the 86th minute, but Poland failed to find the second goal to lose the contest in Moscow.
