Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh has reiterated the government’s commitment to double the income of farmers by 2022.

Inaugurating a national conference on doubling farmers income in New Delhi today, Mr Singh said, the poor, farmers and rural population have always been the focus of Narendra Modi government and this year’s general budget reflects on this commitment.

He said the government is also focusing more on horticulture and food processing as it will help in doubling the farmer’s income.

Addressing the gathering, Himachal Pradesh Governor Acharya Dev Vrat stressed on zero budget farming using tradition methods.

He said, due to excessive use of fertilizers, agricultural productivity, soil quality and the water level has gone down.

NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Dr Rajiv Kumar stressed on the modernization of agriculture. He said, the business as usual in agriculture will not work and farmers have to think differently.

The conference is being organised with a view to identifying various critical issues relating to agriculture and farmers’ welfare and finding appropriate solutions.

The main aim of the conference is to build a consensus around appropriate recommendations that will help in shaping the vision of the Government on Doubling Farmers’ Income by 2022.

Tomorrow, on the second day, the groups for each theme will finalise their presentations and recommendations and make their presentations in the final section in the presence of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
