Supreme Court today awarded an additional 14.75 TMC of Cauvery water to Karnataka. In its verdict, the apex court has granted the global status to Karnataka’s capital city of Bengaluru, hence it will get more Cauvery river water.

The Supreme Court today also reduced Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water. The apex court has upheld the 2007 decision of Cauvery Water Tribunal, while making some amendments. While Cauvery Water Tribunal had allocated 192 TMC water to Tamil Nadu, the apex court has reduced it to 177 TMC. The apex court has kept water share of Puducherry and Kerala unchanged.

The long-awaited judgement was pronounced by a bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Amitava Roy and A M Khanwilkar. The bench had on September 20 last year reserved the verdict on the appeals filed by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala against the 2007 award of the tribunal. The apex court also allowed Tamil Nadu to draw an additional 10 tmc feet ‘groundwater’ from a total of 20 tmc feet beneath the Cauvery basin.
