Several programmes were organized on Monday to mark the 34th anniversary of the Bhopal gas leak tragedy, one of the worst industrial disasters in the world.
A large number of people were killed due to the leak of Methyl Isocyanate gas from Union Carbide Plant in Bhopal on the intervening night of 2nd and 3rd December in 1984, while millions of people are still affected.
An all-religion prayer meeting was held at Barkatullah Bhawan this morning to pay homage to the victims of the tragedy. State Chief Secretary and many other officers were also present in this meeting.
Several NGOs organized rallies and meetings to mark the occasion.
Many years have passed but the wounds of the tragedy are still ripe. According to official figures, about five thousand people died in the incident while NGO’s working among gas victims claimed that this figure is more than 15 thousand.
The government informed that the compensation of 3 thousand 840 crore rupees has been distributed to affected families and adequate medical and other facilities have been provided to the victims.
The state government will continue its efforts for the rehabilitation of gas victims. The Govt also emphasised on the need for environmental protection and industrial safety.
On the other hand, NGOs said that the gas victims are still facing various problems including proper medical facilities, better living conditions and employment.
