At least 22 people were killed and 170 injured whaen an express train derailed in northeastern Taiwan on Sunday
Taiwanese authorities say the accident occurred in Yilan County around 4:50 PM on Sunday.
The train was carrying 366 people. All 8 cars derailed, and 5 of them rolled onto their sides.
Rescuers say they believe none of the passengers are still trapped inside.
Police and emergency officials are investigating what caused the accident.
A Taiwan railway authority spokesperson said they will determine how fast the train was going when it approached the curve.
Authorities are working to clear away the derailed cars and resume rail operations using a line next to where the derailment occurred.
Premier William Lai went to the scene and instructed officials to swiftly investigate the cause of the accident, and resume the operations as soon as possible.
The Puyuma Express began operating in Taiwan in 2013. The train was built by Japan’s Nippon Sharyo, a subsidiary of Central Japan Railway Company.
Its website says the train was designed to safely negotiate curvilinear sections at high speed.
