UP govt to challenge Hashimpura verdict in Delhi HC

AMN

latest newsUttar Pradesh government has decided to challenge the 1987 Hashimpura massacre case verdict in Delhi High Court. A Delhi court had given its verdict around three months ago acquitting all 16 former PAC officials who were accused of killing 42 Muslims in Meerut in 1987.

Additional Advocate General Zafaryab Jilani said that a case was expected to be filed in Delhi High court within a week.

A delegation met the Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in this regard. Jeelani said that a draft of the appeal has already been sent to the concerned lawyers in Delhi and the appeal will be filed immediately after getting their opinion. He further said that the state government wants to file the petition before the court closes for summer vacation.

The decision comes in the wake of various Muslim organisations, asking the UP government to challenge the verdict of a Delhi court. Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Jindal had in his March 21 judgement acquitted the 16 PAC personnel giving them benefit of doubt for want of evidence.
