Several world leaders including US President Barack Obama, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi among others have condemned the killing at a gay night club in Orlando, Florida that left fifty people dead.
Law enforcement officials in US have labelled the attack as an act of domestic terrorism. According to reports, Omar Mateen the Afghan-origin gunman had called 911 once the attacks began and swore allegiance to the Islamic State terror group.
Mateen’s father Seddique Mateen, however, suggested his son was motivated by a different hate and the killing had nothing to do with the religion. He had earlier said Omar was angered after seeing two men kissing in Miami. Mr. Seddique said, they were not aware of any action the shooter was taking and are in shock like the whole country.
Mateen’s ex-wife Sitora Yusufiy said he was mentally unstable and disturbed . Sitora lived with Mateen for four months in 2009 but left him after he started physically abusing her .
