World Health Organization has appealed for 56 million dollars to fund a Global Action Plan to combat the Zika virus, which is spreading across Latin America. The virus is suspected of causing microcephaly or brain damage in babies and Guillain Barre, a neurological disorder.
The WHO strategy focuses on mobilizing and coordinating the abilities and expertise of the agency’s many partners to help countries tackle the Zika virus. The strategy also calls for ensuring medical care to those who are infected and to fast track research and development of vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics.
The Zika virus was discovered in Uganda in 1947 and has spread from Africa to other regions. The infection is mild and is not life threatening.
Meanwhile, a 61-year old woman was also confirmed as the first Zika case in Trinidad and Tobago. The Trinidad-based Caribbean Public Health Agency confirmed the case after testing a blood sample from the woman.
