National President of Welfare Party of India, Dr Raisuddin strongly condemned the denial of bail to Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and others who have been incarcerated for over five years under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for their alleged roles in the 2020 Delhi riots and said this decision is a blatant attack on the fundamental rights of citizens to express dissent and peacefully assembly.
He said the repeated denial of bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam sets a disturbing precedent, intimidating those who dare to voice their opposition to government policies.
He criticised the UAPA law for its stringent provisions and slow investigative processes, which leads to prolonged detention without trial.
He said the denial of bail in the high court raises concerns about the fairness of the trial and the ability of the accused to receive a just outcome.
Dr Raisuddin demanded the immediate release of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and all other activists who have been detained for exercising their democratic rights and called for the repeal of the UAPA, which has become a tool for suppressing dissent and harassing critics and urged the BJP government to respect and protect human rights, including the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
He demanded Supreme of India to intervene in this matter, review the case , ensure free trial and ensure that justice prevails.
Dr Raisuddin also called upon the people of India to stand in solidarity with Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and all those who have been targeted for their activism to advocate for their rights and fight against the misuse of laws that stifle dissent.
