With the rising demand for eco-friendly and locally made products, water bottles made out of bamboo by Tripura’s bamboo artisans are getting demands from across the country and even outside.

The water bottles made out of bamboo have got a big push to its popularity after Bollywood actor Raveena Tandon ordered one last week and appreciated the initiative meant to provide livelihood to the locals.

Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer and Chairperson of Tripura Rehabilitation Plantation Corporation (TRPC) Prasada Rao Vaddarapu is the Mastermind behind the project. He has designed a number of prototypes, researched available literature, and got some help from Bamboo and Crafts Development Institute (BCDI) and Centre of Forest Livelihood and Extension (CFRE) in launching the project.

Mr. Rao told AIR news that these bamboo bottles are far more superior than the products available in the markets as they are properly treated and do not store water directly on the bamboo surface.

A group of 10 traditional artisans from different parts of the state are working under the project, said Mr.Rao. He further informed that taking a cue from the Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana, the state had been working to manufacture the bamboo water bottles for six months now. The first batch of around 100 bottles including the one ordered by Bollywood actor Raveena Tandon have been shipped off to various parts of the country, said Mr. Rao.
