Distancing itself from its ally Shiv Sena’s demand for revocation of voting rights of Muslims, Government today  said that right of voting is a constitutional right and there cannot be any differentiation on any ground in this issue.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu told journalists in New Delhi that NDA government is committed to defend and uphold all the rights conferred to the citizens irrespective of their social and economic identities. He said any suggestion of denying voting right is unacceptable to the government.

Mr. Naidu said that people, institutions and organisations functioning in the Constitutional scheme should avoid making such controversial remarks as they will not help the cause of building an inclusive and resurgent India.

The Minister, however, said it is unfortunate that some political parties are used to what he called vote bank politics which only harm the sections they pretend to be protecting. He said it is time that such politics are brought to an end in the interest of the country.

Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece Saamana, in its editorial, demanded revocation of voting rights of Muslims. The editorial has met with sharp criticism from different political parties.
