The United Nation (UN), has renewed its call on the Bangladesh government to immediately impose a moratorium on capital punishment. In a statement issued in Geneva yesterday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said the government should not implement death sentences awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal. The statement has given the doubts that have been raised about the fairness of trials conducted before the tribunal.
The statement comes in response to Sunday’s execution of Jamaat-e-islami leader Ali Ahsan Muhammed Mujaheed and BNP top leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury for war crimes. The statement however states that the UN opposes death penalty in all circumstances, even for the most serious international crimes. The UN had also expressed concern when two other war criminals were executed in Dec. 2013 and April 2015.
