The Bombay High court today slammed Censor Board over the objections raised by it on controversial movie “Udta Punjab”.
The arguments concluded today and court reserved the decision till Monday. The court was hearing petition filed by Phantom films, one of the producers of the movie ‘Udta Punjab’, challenging the objections raised by Censor Board over the film.
A division bench headed by Justice S C Dharmadhikari asked the Censor Board to explain why it is insisting on deletion of some dialogues and mention of Punjab. The court asked CBFC why it found certain dialogue objectionable? The bench further said that today’s generation is talented and the language used by new generation is also different.
The court observed that controlling anyone’s choices is not proper in democracy and such unnecessary objections only help to publicize the issue. The Court further said that creativity should not be suppressed and that’s certainly not the job of Censor Board.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) lawyer argued that they are objecting to the reference of Punjab and its people and the language used in the film. Hearing the arguments, the court said that it was not satisfied with the suggestions made by the Censor Board.
