US President Donald Trump has cancelled his proposed summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on June 12 in Singapore.

Mr Trump blamed Pyongyang’s tremendous anger and open hostility for his decision. The announcement came hours after North Korea carried out what it said is the demolition of its nuclear test site today. Mr Trump wrote a letter to Kim which was released to the press. However, he kept the door open for future talks with Kim.

Trump wrote a letter to Kim to announce his abrupt withdrawal from what would have been a first-ever meeting between a serving U.S. president and a North Korean leader in Singapore on June 12.

“Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it would be inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting,” Trump wrote. “Please let this letter serve to represent that the Singapore summit, for the good of both parties, but to the detriment of the world, will not take place.”

In the letter, the US President said, the world, and North Korea in particular, has lost a great opportunity for lasting peace and great prosperity and wealth. He said, this missed opportunity is a truly sad moment in history. He also thanked Kim for the release of the three American hostages who are now home with their families in the US. Mr Trump appreciated the North Korean leader for his efforts towards the meeting.

Washington has made it clear it wants to see the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of the North. But Pyongyang has vowed it will never give up its nuclear deterrence until it feels safe from what it terms US aggression.
