The Commission issues a notice to the West Bengal Chief Secretary, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report highlighting the deaths of at least 60 newborns during the first three weeks of August 2026 at the Malda Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal. The alarming toll included ten infant deaths reported on a single day.
Observing that the contents of the report, if true, raise grave concerns regarding the violation of human rights, the Commission has issued a formal notice to the West Bengal Chief Secretary, demanding a comprehensive report on the situation within two weeks.
According to the media report published on August 27, 2026, 44 of the 60 deceased infants had been referred to Malda Medical College from other healthcare facilities after their medical conditions deteriorated significantly.
