A Dhaka court today placed ten former leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) unit on five-day remand in a case lodged over beating fellow student Abrar Fahad to death on early Monday.
The accused are-Mehedi Hasan Rasel, Muhtasim Fuad, Anik Sarker, Ifti Mosharraf Sokal, Sefayetul Islam Jiyon, Ishtiaq Munna, Khandaker Tabakkharul Islam Tanvir, Mozahidur Rahman, Muntamir Al Jemmy and Mehedi Hasan Robin.
Protests have broken out in Bangladesh following killing of a university student. A Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology student Abrar Fahad was beaten to death inside his hostel named Sher-E-Bangla Hall yesterday. The killing sparked off protests in the Dhaka University campus and many other universities across Bangladesh.
Some students suspected him to be associated with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. However, his family strongly denied that Abrar had any link with Shibir. The family registered a case accusing 19 Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders for the murder.
Police have picked up for questioning a few office bearers of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). It is the student wing of the ruling Awami League. Additional Police Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan, Krishna Pada Roy, told reporters that police are scrutinising CCTV footage and no one would be spared regardless of the political affiliation.
Bangladesh Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that those who are involved in the murder of the student will face action.
