AMN / COLOMBO
Sri Lankan Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today asserted that he sees no reason for him to step down amidst claims by rival alliance to form a government. He was addressing a media briefing in Colombo this afternoon.
His comments came as the unity government of two main parties are split in the wake of local body elections held last week, with both claiming to form their own government.
Meanwhile, a committee has been appointed to discuss steps to be taken to form a United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government.
UPFA is currently divided between factions led by President Maithripala Sirisena and former President Mahinda Rajapakse, leading the joint opposition.
The joint opposition says it will support forming a UPFA government without joining it.
The current political crisis was triggered by defeat of UNP and President’s faction at local body polls, resulting in blame game on the two sides.
