cauvery_b_04-10-2012A day after Supreme Court directed Karnataka to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, Farmers in Karnataka staged protests across the state today.

The protestors blocked traffic on Bengaluru-Mysore highway and called for a bandh.

Bus services between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were also affected. Brindavan Garden near the Krishna raja sagar dam has been closed for four days. More than 1,400 police personal have been put on duty in the dam area.

Members of many pro-Kannada organisations and political parties are supporting the farmers.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is holding a meeting with Legal and technical experts on the apex court direction.

It is a prelude to the meeting of floor leaders of Opposition parties, Union Ministers and MPs from the State, Legislators from the Cauvery region convened by the Chief Minister in the afternoon.

The meeting will take stock of the situation and the future course of action to be adopted.

Opposing the Supreme court ‘s directions to release water to Tamil Naidu the Pro farmer and Kannada organizations are observing Mandya District Bandh today. Normal life as will affected and the vehicular traffic has come to stand still in Mandya. Government Offices, Banks and Busines establishments have remain closed.

School and colleges have been declared holiday. As a precautionary measure heavy police forces have been deployed to avoid any untoward incident. Chief minister Siddaramaiah, has appealed to the protesters to remain calm and maintain peace.
