PARLIAMENTProceedings in Lok Sabha remained paralyzed today, the fifth day of the Monsoon Session on various controversies. The session which began on Tuesday could not transact any significant business so far. In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan tried to conduct the business during Question hour and Zero hour amid uproar and slogan shouting by the opposition. But despite the uproar some listed business was conducted. Many Members made special mentions on public issues amidst the din. The House witnessed repeated adjournments before adjourning for the day. When the house met at 2 PM post lunch, there was again pandemonium. During discussion on the Delhi High Court (Amendment) Bill, 2015, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Choudhry stood up on a stand and banged his placard on the Speaker’s table. His protest took place amid continuous slogan-shouting by Congress members.

BJP chief whip Arjun Meghwal moved a suspension motion against Adhir Ranjan Choudhry for the remaining period of the current session. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said Mr Choudhry has shown disrespect to the Speaker’s chair. TMC MP Saugata Roy pleaded against singling out someone and urged the Speaker to show magnanimity. Mr Choudhury expressed regret, and the Speaker asked Meghwal to withdraw his motion. She asked the Congress lawmaker to leave the House and suspended him for a day. As the issue settled down, the Congress and TRS members once again stormed into the well forcing the chair to adjourn the House for the day.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day today as a mark of respect to the memory of a sitting member Kalpataru Das of the Biju Janata Dal. Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari also made obituary reference to two former members R S Gavai of the Republican Party of India and B K Handique of the Congress.
