President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Mohmmed Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have condoled the demise of J Jayalalithaa.

Jayalalithaa passed away at Apollo Hospital in Chennai at 11:30 PM Monday. She was admitted in the hospital since 22nd September with complaints of fever and dehydration. The Condition of 68-year old became critical on Sunday evening, when she suffered a cardiac arrest.

Expressing his heartfelt condolences, Mr Mukherjee said that Jayalalithaa was one of the country’s most charismatic and popular leaders. He said the she was a visionary and able administrator. Mr Ansari said Jayalalithaa’s demise is an irreparable loss to the people of the contry.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has mourned the demise of J Jaylalithaa. In a series of tweets he said, he is deeply saddened at the passing away of Jayalalithaa and her demise has left a huge void in Indian politics. Hailing the AIADMK supremo, Mr Modi said her connect with citizens, concern for welfare of the poor, the women and marginalised will always be “a source of inspiration”.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Vice President Rahul Gandhi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and a number of leaders and film personalities expressed grief over her death.

Seven-day state mourning has been declared from tomorrow morning to mourn the dath of five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Three days’ holiday has also been announced for educational institutions in the State.
