Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged the Commonwealth to send diversified election observers to Bangladesh during the next parliamentary elections. She made the observation when Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland paid a courtesy call on her in London on Sunday, reports the official news agency BSS.
Briefing the media after the meeting, Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen said that Prime Minister Hasina raised the issue of election and proposed the Commonwealth to send diversified election observers to oversee the next general elections. In reply, the Commonwealth Secretary General said they want to help Bangladesh in holding a peaceful, fair and participatory election in the country.
The Commonwealth Secretary General said that political commitment is required from all the parties that they would take part in elections and accept the result and will not indulge in violence whether they win or lose the elections. She also offered to train Bangladesh elections officers at the district level as they did in the past.
Prime Minister Hasina said her government has made the election commission an independent and powerful institution to strengthen the democratic process in the country.
