President Ram Nath Kovind has said that rights of Divyangs (physically disabled)  should be preserved and people should be sensitive towards their needs.

The President also presented the National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Addressing an event in New Delhi to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Mr Kovind said, divyangs are full of confidence and people need to change their mindset towards them. He said, the government is making efforts to provide facilities to divyangs in the country.

President said that the future of the country depends on ensuring all citizens have the capacity to realise their full potential. To achieve this goal, we have to create a sensitive and harmonious society, where every person feels empowered – and a society of empathy, where one person feels the pain of another.

In his address, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot said, more than 8,000 camps have been organised to give equipment to divyangs. He said, divyangs should be given opportunities so that they can showcase their talents and his ministry is working in this direction.

On the occasion, President Kovind also conferred the National Award for Divyangjan to individuals, institutions, organisations, states, districts. The award was given for their outstanding achievements and work done towards empowerment of persons with disabilities under different categories.

The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed in 1992 by a United Nations General Assembly resolution. It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and to increase awareness of the situation of such persons in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. The theme this year is transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all.
