One person was killed and another injured in Kannauj district in Uttar Pradesh, last evening following a clash between two communities during a religious procession.​ Additional police reinforcement has been sent to the area, and no fresh incident of violence has been reported since last night. Several persons have been detained for interrogation.

Quoting the District Magistrate, our correspondent reports that the situation is now fully under control. The government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50 thousand each to the people who were injured in the matter. An FIR has been lodged in the matter and the hunt is on to nab the culprits who tried to disturb the social fabric of Kannauj, the city famous for its fragrance.

Durga idols were immersed in a peaceful manner yesterday evening and people who staged dharna blocking GT Road demanding action against culprits have terminated it after police action. However strict vigil is being maintained with heavy police and security deployment in the troubled areas of the city.
