Indian equity markets remained under pressure on Thursday, extending losses for a third consecutive trading session as investors grappled with rising crude oil prices, intensifying geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and renewed concerns over global growth. Weakness across most sectoral indices, coupled with negative cues from Asian and European markets, dragged benchmark indices lower, while broader market segments witnessed even sharper declines.

The session reflected growing risk aversion among investors as uncertainty surrounding energy supplies, inflationary pressures, and geopolitical developments overshadowed otherwise supportive corporate earnings and domestic economic fundamentals.

The BSE Sensex ended the day lower by 460.30 points, or 0.62%, at 73,249.39, while the NSE Nifty 50 dropped 123.70 points, or 0.54%, to close at 22,687.65, slipping below the psychologically important 22,700 mark.

Notably, both benchmark indices have now fallen nearly 2% over the last three trading sessions, highlighting the nervous mood prevailing in global financial markets.

Crude Oil and Geopolitics Drive Sentiment

The principal concern for investors remained the sharp rise in global crude oil prices following the escalation of tensions across the Gulf region. Although Brent crude eased during Thursday’s trading, it continued to hover above the $110-per-barrel level, keeping markets worried about potential disruptions to energy supplies.

For an oil-import-dependent economy like India, a sustained increase in crude prices can significantly impact inflation, widen the current account deficit, pressure the rupee, and raise input costs for several sectors. Market participants therefore reacted cautiously to developments in the Middle East, preferring to reduce exposure to risk assets.

The situation has also raised concerns about future monetary policy trajectories globally. Higher energy prices often translate into elevated inflation expectations, which can complicate central bank efforts to support economic growth.

Heavyweights Drag Benchmarks Lower

Among Nifty constituents, heavyweight stocks exerted substantial downward pressure on the indices.

Eternal emerged as one of the biggest losers, declining 2.53%, followed by Reliance Industries, which fell 2.03%, and HDFC Bank, which slipped 1.82%. Selling in these large-cap names offset gains witnessed in a handful of defensive stocks.

Market experts noted that investors are increasingly rotating towards sectors perceived as relatively insulated from macroeconomic uncertainty while reducing exposure to cyclical and consumption-oriented businesses.

Broader Markets Underperform

The weakness was even more pronounced beyond the benchmark indices.

The BSE MidCap Index declined 0.79%, while the BSE SmallCap Index dropped 0.92%, indicating broader selling pressure across market segments.

Market breadth remained decisively negative, reflecting the widespread nature of the downturn. On the National Stock Exchange, 2,512 stocks declined compared with 1,024 advances, while 106 shares closed unchanged.

Such market breadth suggests that investors adopted a cautious stance not only towards large-cap stocks but across the broader equity universe.

Sectoral Performance

Almost all sectoral indices finished in negative territory, underlining the broad-based weakness in the market.

Technology stocks remained under pressure following mixed earnings results from major global technology companies and growing concerns about the pace of returns from massive artificial intelligence investments.

Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) stocks also witnessed significant selling, reflecting worries that persistent inflationary pressures could dent consumer spending and corporate margins.

The pharmaceutical sector stood out as the sole notable gainer during the session, benefiting from its traditional status as a defensive investment avenue during periods of heightened uncertainty.

Investors often shift towards healthcare and pharmaceutical stocks when broader economic visibility weakens, and Thursday’s trading pattern appeared consistent with that trend.

Rupee Weakens, Bond Yields Rise

Adding to market concerns, the Indian rupee snapped its eight-session gaining streak against the US dollar.

The domestic currency was trading around 94.9150 per US dollar, compared with the previous close of 94.3800, reflecting growing demand for the greenback amid risk-off sentiment.

Meanwhile, yields on India’s benchmark 10-year government bond rose to 7.465% from 7.443% in the previous session. Rising yields generally indicate expectations of higher borrowing costs or inflationary pressures and can reduce the relative attractiveness of equities.

Gold prices also witnessed profit booking. MCX Gold futures for December 2026 settlement declined 0.87% to ₹1,44,810 per 10 grams.

The US Dollar Index (DXY) remained relatively stable at 101.66, while yields on US benchmark Treasury securities edged lower during global trading hours.

Global Markets Remain Volatile

Overseas markets offered little support to domestic equities.

European stocks traded lower as investors assessed geopolitical risks, crude oil developments, and corporate earnings announcements. Asian markets also ended largely weaker, led by declines in technology shares.

Investor concerns intensified following mixed earnings reports from major US technology firms, raising questions about whether enormous spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure will generate commensurate returns.

Additionally, worries about potential disruptions to global energy supplies continued to dominate market discussions.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) added to these concerns by forecasting a contraction in economic output across the Middle East, North Africa, and Pakistan region in 2026 due to the ongoing conflict. While the IMF expects a strong rebound in 2027 if tensions ease, it also emphasized the unusually high degree of uncertainty surrounding the outlook.

Those projections reinforced investor fears that prolonged instability could have broader consequences for global trade, investment flows, and energy markets.

Wall Street Signals Mixed Outlook

Despite geopolitical concerns, US markets had closed higher overnight, supported by strong corporate earnings and gains in technology stocks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.69%, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.58% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.05%.

However, futures trading on Thursday suggested caution was returning, with Dow futures indicating a weaker opening for Wall Street.

Investors globally remain focused on corporate earnings reports as they assess whether company fundamentals can offset mounting macroeconomic risks.

Among international companies, results from technology giants remained a major talking point.

Meta Delivers Strong Growth

Meta Platforms reported robust revenue growth for the quarter ended September 2026, supported by continued strength in digital advertising and platform engagement.

Revenue increased substantially year-on-year, while profitability improved despite a significant one-time legal settlement charge. Excluding exceptional items, earnings significantly exceeded reported figures.

The company also projected strong revenue growth for the coming quarter and raised its annual expense outlook, highlighting continued heavy investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Investors are closely evaluating whether escalating AI-related expenditures across the technology sector will ultimately translate into sustainable earnings growth.

Tesla Faces Growth Questions

Tesla reported quarterly revenue largely unchanged from the previous year’s level, while net profit fell sharply.

Although the company exceeded analyst estimates on adjusted earnings, investors focused on management’s decision to reduce projected capital expenditure for 2026.

The move has generated debate regarding the pace of future investments in electric vehicles, autonomous technologies, robotics, and AI-related initiatives.

Tesla shares reportedly came under pressure in after-hours trading as market participants analysed the implications of the revised spending roadmap.

IPO Market Remains Active

The primary market continued to attract investor attention despite weakness in secondary markets.

Jio Platforms Draws Strong Demand

The much-anticipated initial public offering of Jio Platforms continued to receive enthusiastic investor interest.

By Thursday evening, the issue had been subscribed over five times, reflecting strong demand from institutional as well as retail investors.

Market participants view the offering as one of the most significant public issues in recent years, and subscription trends suggest confidence in the company’s long-term growth prospects despite current market volatility.

Paras Healthcare Sees Moderate Response

In contrast, Paras Healthcare’s IPO received a more subdued response.

The issue was subscribed only around one-third of the shares on offer by late Thursday, indicating selective investor appetite amid uncertain market conditions.

Analysts believe healthcare-sector fundamentals remain strong, though investors appear increasingly valuation-conscious in the current environment.

New Listing Delivers Flat Debut

Shares of Fusion CX made a subdued market debut.

The stock closed at ₹289.75, representing only a marginal premium over its issue price of ₹289. While the stock initially listed at a modest premium and witnessed intraday volatility, its overall performance suggested cautious investor participation.

The relatively muted listing reflects broader market uncertainty and investors’ preference for quality and valuation discipline rather than speculative enthusiasm.

The company stated that key machinery required for its upcoming solar-cell manufacturing facility had already been delivered, helping alleviate investor concerns.

Outlook

Market participants are likely to remain focused on three key variables in the coming sessions: crude oil prices, developments in the Middle East, and the ongoing earnings season. Any further escalation in geopolitical tensions or sustained rise in energy prices could continue to pressure risk assets and increase volatility across emerging markets, including India.

At the same time, strong corporate earnings, resilient domestic economic indicators, and continued interest in the primary market could help limit downside risks. Investors are expected to maintain a selective approach, favouring quality companies with strong balance sheets and earnings visibility until greater clarity emerges on global macroeconomic conditions.
