ECIToday is the last day of filing of nominations for the first phase of Assembly elections in Assam and West Bengal. Scrutiny will be held tomorrow, while candidates can withdraw their nominations till Monday.

Polling for this phase will take place on the April 4.

Two-phased polling will be held for the 126-member Assam Assembly, while the West Bengal Assembly, which has 294 members, will go to polls in six phases. In West Bengal, most of the 18 Assembly constituencies are located in Jungle Mahal region of south-western Bengal. Six of them are in Paschim Medinipur, nine in Purulia and three in Bankura district. All the 18 seats have been categorized as sensitive, due to the Maoist problem that existed here till about three years back. Special security has been put in place by the Election Commission.

Polling for the  first phase in Assam, will be held in 65 assembly seats in Barak valley hill districts and Upper and North Assam. Chief Minister and Congress leader Tarun Gogoi has filed nomination for seeking a fourth term from Titabor assembly.

BJP MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasha has also filed nomination for the same Titabor seat. Former Chief Minister and Asom Gana Parishad leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta submitted nomination from his home turf Bahrampur seat where polling will be held in second phase on 11th of April. Former Industry minister Pradyut Bordoloi also filed nomination from Margherita. Amid the developments, campaigning has gained momentum in the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to campaign on 26th and 27th of this month.

Polling in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will take place on 16th May. Counting of votes will be taken up on May 19th.
