New Year revelry continued on a cold and foggy Monday as people turned out in large numbers in celebratory mood to the sprawling India Gate lawns, causing massive traffic jams and throwing normal traffic out of gear.
Traffic choked near India Gate C-Hexagon due to gathering of more than one lakh pedestrians and heavy volume of motorists, Delhi Police said in a tweet.
It advised people to avoid India Gate and take alternate route to their destinations.
Traffic Police attributed the heavy turn out of the people due to gathering of devotees near Gurdwara Bangla Sahib which had a cascading effect, spilling over to nearby RML Hospital, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, GPO — all situated near Rajiv Chowk.
A large number of visitors to Delhi Zoo and Pragati Maidan caused heavy snarl and motorists, heading from Noida to Central Delhi, were stuck on the road for nearly four hours.
