Myanmar’s government has pledged to allow the quick return of Rohingya Muslims who fled violence in their country to Bangladesh. In a meeting of delegates from the United Nations and foreign countries in the capital, Naypyidaw, yesterday, Minister in charge of the Rohingya issue explained the government’s efforts on the repatriation.
He said Myanmar and Bangladesh will set up a joint working group within 3 weeks under a bilateral agreement signed late last month. The minister added proceedings to bring the refugees back to their home villages will begin within 2 months.
The United Nations estimates that more than 6.2 lakh Rohingyas have fled to neighboring Bangladesh. They were escaping the fighting that erupted in Myanmar’s Rakhine state in late August between Rohingya militants and government security forces.
