Police had to resort to lathicharge on the unruly crowd in Bhumma village of Muzaffarnagar Uttar Pradesh when crowd reported to be preventing police take away the body of a murdered youth
The protesters were demanding that the killers should be arrested immediately. The authorities have suspended the Meerapur SHO for his slackness to tackle the situation. The tension prevailed in the village under Meerapur police station when unidentified miscreants gunned down a youth belonging to another community last night.
Heavy police force was rushed to the spot. The irate locals, enraged over killing, fired several rounds of gunshots and smashed the police vehicle. The policemen had to seek shelter to save themselves. The senior administrative and police officials including DM, SSP reached the scene and persuaded people to calm down. The situation is reported to be tense but under control. More police force from nearby places including Meerut and Bijnor has been called in. The police said that security has been tightened and extra police force has been deployed in the village.
The DIG Police, Saharanpur Range, Raghvir Lal has said that the district administration would recommend for fifteen lakh rupees as help to the kin of the deceased besides giving job to one person of the family.
The Centre has expressed concern over two recent incidents of group clashes in Uttar Pradesh. In a communication, the Union Home Ministry yesterday asked the state government to take all possible measures to ensure peace in Kasganj and Saharanpur districts where the incidents of group clashes took place on 26th and 27th of this month.
