Srinagar, June 22 (PTI) Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar today cautioned that unless law makers were sincere, the judiciary and the executive could encroach upon areas that legitimately belong to the legislature.

"If the legislators perform their duties sincerely, the entire nation is proud of them. If, however, their performance falls short of expectations, the legislative body is bound to suffer from performance-deficit, compromising its role as a law-making and oversight body," Kumar said.

She was addressing a symposium organised as part of the 75th All India presiding officers conference here.

Kumar said, "It is the members’ participation and conduct in the House that determines the standing of the Legislature.

Members’ inability to perform the assigned roles in the House can throw the entire system out of gear, leaving an opening for other branches of the State to encroach upon the areas that legitimately belong to the Legislature".
