Amidst growing controversy over the alleged anti-national sloganeering in the JNU campus, the arrested students’ union leader Kanaihya Kumar has been sent to two-day police custody by the Patiala House court. His custody was to end today.
Kanhaiya, is alleged to have made anti-national slogans at a protest organised at JNU against the hanging of Parliament attack guilty Afzal Guru.
A case of sedition and criminal conspiracy has been registered against the student leader. A scuffle broke out between lawyers and students as well as media persons as JNU student’s union president Kanhaiya was produced in Patiala House court.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has said that investigations reveal that Kanhaiya had indeed participated at the JNU protest and indulged in Anti-India sloganeering.
The Vice-Chancellor of JNU Jagadesh Kumar addressed the media on the issue for the first time on Monday and said that high level enquiry committee set up to look into the issue will submit its report by 25 February. After that, the future course of action will be determined.
Jagadesh Kumar has clarified that he did not call the police on the campus. He appealed to teachers and students for normalcy so that academic activity could restart.
On the basis of the video footage of the protest, the enquiry committee has taken statements from eye witnesses. 8 students have been suspended in this case and they will not be allowed to attend classes till the investigation is over.
Police has constituted a team to trace the 13 students who are alleged to have participated in anti-India sloganeering.
Police has also requested that the case be handed over to the NIA- the organisation that specializes in terrorism- related cases.
The case is in the court now and the hearing will take place on Tuesday. The government has said the police is handling the case and the truth will surface soon.
The government has clearly stated that guilty will not be spared and no innocent will be convicted.
